about
‘I’m Not Fighting It’ is the opening track and the keystone song of Dream-self, the third Coda Chroma studio album (out 31 March 2023), and foreshadows the themes of this introspective record; giving into the subconscious, lamenting the unknown and looking further into our dream state.
Lucas’ ethereal and masterful voice is clear and at the helm, where it should be. As with all Coda Chroma releases, ‘I’m Not Fighting It’ is meticulously produced by revered New Zealand producer Damien Charles.
Layers of brooding synthesizers and harmonies make this opening track an immediate deep dive into the fabric of this stirring collection of new songs.
Opening with dark swirling synthesizers, Lucas’ haunting vocals emerge enveloped in reverb. Gently strummed acoustic guitar is introduced before the full band and driving drums join and we’re on our way.
Melancholic twists and turns are emphasised with jangly electric guitar reminiscent of artists such as Echo and the Bunnymen, paired with other worldly electronics and layered backing vocals.
There is an experimental twist to Lucas’ writing, however the strong pop sensibilities are a key characteristic within the tracks on the album, making the listening experience instantly nostalgic.
Of the single, Lucas says, “‘I’m Not Fighting It’ is about giving into my subconscious and allowing it to be my co-writer, trusting that it might have a truth or two on offer. I like the idea that my subconscious brain is always taking notes and feeding snippets to my dream-self who, from time to time, spits out a technicolour owl pellet in the form of a song. This song serves a reminder to myself: take the offering, grab a net when the reflection shudders and the surface bubbles.”
lyrics
It’s a lot to begin with a lonely thread
I might add, where’re you going with this?
So I follow it out of my sensible head
You know I don’t want to be the owner of it
I like to think that I’m open to anything
But I might need a little more convincing
I let my Dreamself carry me on its back
I’m happy here
I’m not fighting it
I’m not fighting it so
You can think it over
Take away whatever you want
Another minute in the hour of the day I’m in
All at once familiar and unsettling
I couldn’t carry back all that I had to bring
While I waited by the road I was singing something
Couldn’t put my finger on what it was
Some old record beaming in from the past
I decided to take the rest of the afternoon off
Wait right here for my call
I’m not fighting it
I’m not fighting it so
You can think it over
Shrug your shoulders oh
You don’t have to love it
It won’t bother me
